We are fishermen. We are hunters. And we are Montanans. Combine those three things, and fishing for gophers is a natural pastime — particularly in the spring, when the rivers are blown out and gophers abound. Or on a hot summer day with a hangover. Or when you want to freak out some bleeding-heart tourists from California. Actually, anytime is a good time to catch gophers on a fly rod, and it's fun for participants and spectators alike. You can even do it shit-faced at an undeveloped lot within stumbling distance of your house, so it's also a safe and responsible activity. Everybody wins — except, of course, the gophers.
